The Experts of Meteo

Founded in 1995, Meteo Expert (CEM) is one of the most reliable European private firms in applied research and forecasting in the fields of meteorology and climatology.

In keeping with the design lines that inspired its foundation, CEM has started from the very beginning to work by activating two main structures: the first one is represented by the Division of Research and Development in the field of Physics and the second identifies with the Division of Meteorology.

These two units, which employ solely Physicists, have been engaged in an active interchange of professional experiences in order to ensure that every research project has specific goals in support of the meteorologists, so as to provide a significant boost both to the quality and the usability of forecasts.

Over the past ten years CEM has developed various research projects, mainly related to meteorological and climate analyses, comparison between models, long-term simulations, emergency response to extreme events, management of water as a function of the observed and predicted conditions from the meteorological-hydrological point of view. These projects have been developed in partnership with the most prestigious Italian research institutes such as the CNR (the Italian National Research Council), the Milan University and Milan Politecnico. Some of these projects have received economic contribution from regional, national and European funds, and have been subjects of articles and communications in international conferences and meetings.

In the international context we would like to highlight the CEM activities within the CEOP (Coordinated Energy and Water Cycle Observation Project), as a focal point for WCRP/GEWEX (World Climate Research Program – WMO and the Global Energy and Water Exchanges Project) program, where CEM participates in conjunction with numerous European and worldwide institutions, collaborating with BoM (Bureau of Meteorology, Australia), CPTEC (Previsão Centro de Estudos de Tempo and Climáticos, Brazil), ECMWF (European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts, European Organization based in Reading, UK), ECPC (Experimental Climate Prediction Center, the University of California, San Diego, USA), JMA (Japan Meteorological Agency), MSC (Meteorological Service Canada), NCEP (National Centers for Environmental Prediction, USA) and others.

SYSTEMS AND TECHNOLOGY AT METEO EXPERT

CEM generates weather forecasts using its own computer center which is based on a multi- cluster structure, consisting of 1.000 parallel processors, capable of performing simultaneous elaborations on more areas and different contexts.

Several physical-mathematical models run contemporarily on this system to contribute to the production of forecasts both at global (whole globe) and local scale, with levels of detail that can be up to 1-2 km² and, for specific needs, even a few hundred square meters. Inside CEM, in fact, an innovative forecasting system has been developed and is continually improving: it is based on the concurrent use of multiple physical-mathematical models and multi-model techniques, capable of significantly increasing the quality and detail of forecasts.

Some years ago CEM acquired the Leads® system, a powerful and innovative system for the integration, processing, storage and display of all types of meteorological and environmental data. CEM, also makes use of other sophisticated equipment that include two weather radars, able to monitor the clouds and precipitation evolution on the

large metropolitan areas of Milan and Rome, and access to different networks of weather stations and lightning detectors.

Delivery services to our customers are based on a structure of servers connected to the Internet through a dedicated high capacity optical fiber, with firewall systems to ensure high service levels.

All CEM technological systems are equipped with UPS; CEM also has its own power generator capable of supporting all the systems even in case of long-term failure of the power supply network.

THE ACTIVITIES OF THE METEO EXPERT

CEM activities cover all areas for which weather information and forecasts assume a considerable importance: from agriculture to the environment, from transport to energy, from insurance to distribution, from publishing to television.

Among the most significant collaborations in the industrial market, we include those with most of the largest Italian operators in the utility sector where we supply information to support policies for production, storage and distribution of electricity and gas; in this sector CEM has become a benchmark, both for traditional and renewable energy sources, providing service to organizations such as Terna, ENI, ENEL, Edison, SNAM, A2A and many others.

CEM also boasts significant experience in the area of transport and mobility with the supply of advanced services to Italian organizations such as Ferrovie Nord Milano, several highway operators and AMSA.

A particular focus should be given to the support activities leading to the operational management of snow removal plans during the winter, these are:

  • improvement of predictive models at very local scale, with high geographical resolution (for specific applications in areas smaller than 1Km²
  • development of alerting systems for the various weather parameters at several levels, even for complex structures (e.g., prediction of ice formation on HV overhead power lines)
  • now-casting 24/7 specialized support in case of “emergency” situations

The CEM also operates in the marine sector, with services dedicated to shipping, off-shore activities, sailing, sea sports, as for the 2012 America’s Cup World Series in Venice. The marine forecasts developed by CEM for the entire globe, with high temporal and spatial detail, covers all the parameters of interest for navigation:

  • Waves (surface and swell)
  • Wind and other atmospheric parameters
  • Storms
  • Currents
  • Tides
  • Ice limits

During 2012, CEM has established the internal division GAWS® (Global Aviation Weather Services) which in January 2013 obtained – the only Italian private organization to do so – the ENAC-EASA certification as ANSP -MET (cert. ref. ANSP – CAA – 012) in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 550/2004 of the European Parliament and the Council and of the Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) No. 1035/2011 of the Commission.

Thanks to the employment of certified meteorologists, trained in accordance to the WMO -258 regulations and English TeA liv.4, CEM is capable to deliver, 24/7, the various meteorological services for civil aviation:

  • Messaging airport: auto-METAR, TAF, AIREP, airport warnings, wind shear, volcanic ash
  • Weather folder
  • Weather briefing
  • Flight- dispatch (FAA certified)

Our experience in the aviation sector includes the operational meteorological service for Aosta Airport (LIMW) and the meteorological services for the airport managing bodies of Milano- Linate (SEA) and Torino Caselle (SAGAT).

Meteo Expert has been the main partner for the development of a on-board meteorological service for light aviation.

CEM operates a Television Production Division, with dedicated studios and the most modern equipment for digital production and post-production, to supply all the many daily editions of meteo.it weather forecasts for Mediaset TV channels.

Even in the radio sector major national networks and regional radios throughout Italy rely on CEM, reaching a daily audience of over 20 million listeners. Some of the major Internet portals and the national operators of mobile telephony also rely on the collaboration of CEM to provide weather information services to their customers.

True to the pioneer spirit that guides them in their work, the meteorologists at CEM have a strong commitment to science that is evident in all their presentations on television, their presence at meetings and scientific conferences, publication of peer-reviewed papers and a series of books, having as subject various issues related to meteorology. These books have become best sellers in Italy, and also reference texts for university meteorological courses.

Meteo Expert is also involved in education. Getting to know meteorology and understanding weather forecasts is very important because atmospheric events affect our daily life. The solution of climate and environmental issues is potentially in the hands of today’s children, future men and women who will have to face the problems of an overpopulated, stressed planet. Meteorologists at CEM hold classes that are diversified for students’ level and age, from elementary up to high school.

Through Weather Labs it’s possible to recreate weather phenomena with dedicated experiments, from forming a cloud in a bottle to producing a water tornado. Classes are about topics like:

  • Understanding the atmosphere
  • How weather forecasts are made
  • How to become a meteorologist
  • Interpreting climate change

Ecology, respect for nature and its dynamics are all part of the knowledge that this generation will need to possess to face the increasing challenges that await them and at the same time increase their identity as global citizens.

These are the premises that form the basis of the MeteoHeroes project.

MeteoHeroes project starts in 2015 from the original idea of Luigi Latini and Meteo Expert based on the fact that, in view of the increasing importance of global issues like climate change, pollution and global warming, our best bet is educating future generations.

Our new “digital native” generation is more attracted by multimedial and interactive devices and content. For this reason Meteo Expert has chosen to release this “education game” from a mobile app which is able to broadcast environmental knowledge and facts about the weather and climate to a vast audience of children, offering them convincing characters they can easily relate to as they are kids and super heroes at the same time.

The solution of climate and environmental issues is potentially in the hands of today’s children, future men and women who will have to face the problems of an overpopulated, stressed planet.

The success of this free app in Italy convinced Meteo Expert to invest in co-production with Mondo Tv Spa of the MeteoHeroes TV series.

The latest initiative started in 2017 is the EOS – Climate and Environment project (www.eos.academy), which is based on the scientific view of weather, climate and environment; it uses an innovative technique to communicate weather and environment-related themes.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
